Additional Interaction of Color: Text of the Original Edition With Revised Plate Section Information
|
The masterworks of one of the most influential teacher-artists of the twentieth century, originally published as a limited, boxed edition in 1963, was conceived as a guide and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students. A paperbound edition, containing the unabridged text of the original edition, plus ten representative color plates, chosen from the original silk-screen reproductions and printed by offset lithography, was published in 1971. Since those color plates have now been worn out in repeated reprintings, Mr. Albers has selected ten different color studies, with new comments, for this revised edition.
"The text of Interaction of Color provides the careful reader with the content of Josef Albers’ famous color course. His teaching is based on learning by direct perception, and not by theories or color systems. There are many books on color on the market, but no one combines eyesight with such profound insight as Josef Albers does in Interaction of Color."—Hannes Beckmann
"The publication of this famous book in paperback is an event. . . . It is clearly written and easy to understand. . . . This book ought to be owned by any serious student or teacher, regardless of the kind of painting he does."—The Artist

Freddie I think it was a postal error. This product was sent to the wrong place and returned to Amazon. Not cool. We found the book at a local vender.
I've actually had the privilege of seeing the real screen printed copy of this book and thought I'd buy this much smaller version online. Nothing, of course, is as good as the real thing but this book is still very interesting and has a ton of useful information if you're looking to understand color a little more in depth.
It is a great reference for those just starting color theory and for those who want a refresher. This book is a delightful small version of Albers larger body of work. It is also a real mind bender and great way to stretch one's assumptions about color because of the exercises Albers sets up to show the reader/viewer that color truly is relative.
Although the author invites students to recreate his studies using colored paper scavenged from various sources, those interested in human vision and optical effects may learn much just by reading. This study will be of equal interest to scientists and artists. Topics include:visual memorythe relativity of colorlight intensity, darknessgradation studiessubtraction of colorcolor deception, after-imagetransparence and space-illusionthe Bezold effectcolor juxtapositionfilm color and volume colorthe Weber-Fechner Lawtenerature and humidity in colorvibrating and vanishing boundaries, etc.Explanation of color terms
I found using the larger paint swatches found at the local hardware store worked quite well and best of all they're free. He gives well thought out examples and outlines exercises that can be used to fine tune your ability to see the more subtle nuances within the color spectrum and how important context affects our perceptions of color. Josef Albers revolutionized how we approach the application of color in everything from fine art to architecture. In this book he walks you through lessons in theory and practical exercises he used to train students when he was teaching at Yale University. Most of the exercises use in the book require various shades and tints of colored paper.
